WHY?????????

I love Louis CK because he is brutally honest about parenting and kids. I first saw this clip when I was a nanny and I couldn’t believe how well he described a child’s obsession with why?

For example, one time the kid I worked for asked why I was wearing the same clothes as yesterday and looked tired. I kept trying to evade the real reason which was that I had a one night stand but eventually it got to, “because I had a slumber party and we played all night”. Then the mom walked in and I was saved!

Yesterday Katie Stark tweeted about her kids asking why and I was reminded of this. To look at her blog click here. Now that I am a parent I relate to this more because before I had Princess A I was the person with no kids judging parents. Now that I have a kid I am way less judgmental of other parents because I know how hard it can be.

Enjoy the clip and any advice on what I should say to Princess A when she starts asking why over and over again?

Stay Glamorous,

Shannon

  1. Thank you for turning this girls frown upside down. My 2 under 2 almost did me in this morning.

  2. awwwwwwwwwwwww sweetie, thanks for sharing and awwwwwwwwwwwww thats for sharing my blog info. I will be doing one about working on a card/postcard for Princess A, as long as you don’t mind me doing that.

  3. My oldest son, who’s 11 1/2, was a never ending why box….
Why are the trees green, why does he have no hair, why does GiGi (my mom), have funny skin, etc…
But the most embarrassing why, was when he was in a public bathroom w/ me, he was 5 and asked “why are you bleeding from your vagina? Do you need your special band-aid?” .
I heard everyone snickering, I tried to quiet him, but he just kept asking the same question, so I had to explain it to him right tbere.
I will never forget that WHY question ever! LOL
Shannon, all you can do is answer her honestly, I always have w/ my oldest & will do so with Ian, when he gets to the why stage.
It will keep the lines of communication open, b/c they’ll know they can ask or talk to you about anything as they get older.
My oldest tells me everything & for that, I’m truly grateful that I never answered “just b/c”, like I hear so many people say.

  4. I am going through this right now. I have a two-year old. I kind of hate to admit this but about three months ago, I actually put him in time-out because he would not stop asking WHY? Trust me after about an hour you get desperate. Now after calling every “veteran” mom I know, I now pick up a book to read to him, or we go outside. Just anything to get his mind off of all the questions. It helps entertain him, and keeps me sane.

Thanks for sharing the vid, I have never heard of him before but I loved it and am about to wait him on netflix.

  5. I don’t have any children of my own, but I do have two nephews and I spent a lot of time with them when they were little. One day, when my oldest nephew was about 4 or 5 years old, I took him shopping and while we were in the car on the way to the mall, he started with the why questions. I did my best to answer them all, but after awhile it started to get really annoying so I did what a lot of parents do: I started to say “because”. You know what the little monkey did? He started to giggle. That’s when I realized he knew that he was bugging me and he was bound and determined to keep it up for as long as he could. 🙂

  6. I don’t have kids (yet!), but I know, like shannon said, that they have a tendency to ask a bunch of why questions around two-three years old. It’s normal, but it “using” every little bit of patience you got. But let’s not forget the others kinds of questions, the “creative” ones I would call them. They’re not “why” ones, but there more like: is that could exist… ? and they could be really embarrassing or weird. I remember clearly a incident of that kind with my nephew: we were in the car with his mother (my sister-in-law) and his little sister and we just picked them up from the daycare. My nephew (as he always do) start telling his day to his mother and suddenly, he turns quiet and seems to be in a profond reflexion. After a couple a minutes, he asks suddenly: Mom, does square poop exist ? And triangle poop too ? I remember that me and my sister-in-law looked at each other with a “WHAT ????” face and we started giggle under our breath the rest of the way home.

In conclusion, I think we, parents, espacially mothers, have to be prepare for EVERYTHING when your kid start to ask questions….

  7. We do the why game with Orion he learned its annoying lol

  8. OMG… laughing so hard… it’s all so true!!!!! my 2 1/2 year old son is starting with the “WHY?” now… it’s driving me mad.

Its’ also true about other parents feeling bad for parents. I’ve given that sympathetic look to other moms and gotten a few myself..
